Research Seminar Series: Dr. Chuck Thigpen, PT, Ph.D., ATC

     On November 5th, 2008 over 45 physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses and students gathered in the Brooks Center Research Lab to participate in the last Research Seminar Series for 2008. Dr. Chuck Thigpen, PT, Ph. D, ATC presented Evidence Based Rehabilitaon for Subacromial Impingement Syndrome. The inservice discussed the evidence based shoulder examination, conservative ways to manage shoulder pain and research to support these findings. Dr. Thigpen gave hands on demonstrations and showed video clips to help the audience understand these concepts. 

     Dr. Thigpen also discussed his current research project, #07-173 Randomized Clinical Trials of Rehabilitation for Subacromial Impingement. This study is looking at short and long term effectiveness of a combination of manual therapy and therapeutic exericise as compared to therapeutic exercise only. It is currently enrolling patients from the following clinics: Center of Sports Therapy, Mandarin, Cooperative Rehabilitation, Fleming Island, Orange Park, Monument, Waterford Lakes and Amelia Island.

     The Research Seminar Series for 2009 is still in the process of being scheduled. We will post the specific schedule as it is finalized.

The 2009 Research Seminar Series will host topics in the following areas:

• Falls and Fall Prevention in the Elderly
• The latest update on JOINTS (Joint replacement Outcomes in IRFs and Nursing Treatment Sites)
• LEAPS (Locomotor Experience Applied Post Stroke)- 1/28/09
• The Latest Research in Walking Recovery in the Pediatric SCI population
• Other topics TBA


 

     The Research Seminar Series are held on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00 pm in the Brooks Center Research Gym-located in the Health Care Plaza. Ceus for various disciplines are offered. The first Research Seminar Series will be LEAPS (Locomotor Experience Applied Post Stroke) presented by Joann Gallichio and her team and is scheduled for January 28, 2009.
